Valletta is colloquially called il-Belt (the City), even though its Maltese name is still Valletta. The capital city of Malta takes its name after its founder Jean Parisot de Valette, a hero of the Great Siege of 1565 against the Ottomans, and the Grand Master of the Order of Malta. Valletta has been designated European Capital of Culture for 2018!
